What is a Magnetic Resonance (MR) test?
Magnetic Resonance is the non-invasive method for viewing the inside of the human body. An MR scanner uses a magnetic field that is not harmful to the human body. The test is safe even for pregnant women. In most of the cases this method allows the doctor to make a quick and accurate diagnosis for a large number of diseases or to eliminate serious suspicions. Nowadays, diagnostic imaging is an integral and irreplaceable part of diagnostics, which enables quicker recovery. MR tests are applicable to neurology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, surgery, laryngology, paediatrics, gynaecology and oncology. A great advantage of MR tests is the fact that it is used to take pictures of the cross-section of the human body to show any surface. No special preparation for the test is required.
As you may need to be given an injection of contract agent, you should not eat anything two hours before the scan. Before taking a scan of the abdominal cavity, please have a drink of black currant juice (approximately 1litre) for a better differentiation of your bowels.

Below is a short description of our MR scanner:

The Laboratory uses the latest, high-field 1.5T magnetic resonance scanner - MAGNETOM SYMPHONY MAESTRO CLASS 1.5T (there is no device of strongest magnetic field in Podkarpackie voivodeship). It is vital because a strong magnetic field enables precise imaging in a short period of time (high definition) including even small organs, for example pituitary gland. Thanks to the quick acquisition a dynamic test is also possible (in several phases at short intervals after administering contrast to a patient).

Our magnetic resonance allows to conduct a whole range of tests, including those that cannot be conducted in other medical centres:

dynamic test of pituitary gland (which is vital in detection of microadenomas) and inflammatory changes in liver (cancerous lesions)

0102

examination of the organs in the abdominal cavity and the bile ducts (which is a novelty in diagnostic imaging and can replace an ERCP test)

0304

examination of genitals (uterus and egg sac lesions), prostate gland (prostate cancer diagnostics) and bladder

0506

We offer also routine check-ups:

- brain (the most important method in the diagnosis of tumours, strokes, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory changes, developmental anomalies, post-surgery follow-ups)

0708

- neck vessels carrying blood into and out of the brain (developmental anomalies, aneurysms, angiomas, stenoses, dissections)

09010

- bony face (including eye socket, sinus), throat, larynx – which is vital in inflammatory or cancerous changes

- joints, bones, soft tissues in every part of the body - MR joint scanning is currently the best non-invasive method for examining joints. A MR scan can be used for the following joints: shoulder joint, elbow joint, wrist joint, hip joint, knee joint, ankle joint and foot joint. The scanner allows us to take perfect pictures of tendons and ligaments (inflammatory changes differentiation, post-traumatic lesions, cancerous lesions), which can later be used by our orthopaedist to decide whether to prescribe preservative or surgical treatment. A Mr can also be used for soft tissues examination (for example: muscles – post-traumatic lesions, nodes).

011012013014

- spine (cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum spine) - MR scanning is a perfect method
of examining dyscopathy-related and other changes in the spine. It is best used to detect tumours in the vertebral canal. We also use a specialist magnetic resonance coil for examining the cervical spine and the other sections of the spine. Magnetic Resonance is a very accurate method of examining bone tumours and inflammatory changes as well as intrabone damage.

015

-abdominal cavity – a MR scanning enables a very precise examination of liver, pancreas with bile and pancreas ducts – MRCP
- pelvis – lesions in reproductive organs, prostate (especially the evaluation of the cancerous lesions)

You are more than welcome to ask our radiologists further questions about the other possibilities of our magnetic resonance.

How to prepare for an MR test?
No special preparation for the test is required. However, as you may need to be given
an injection of contrast agent (for a better differentiation, especially in surgical procedures), you should not eat anything two hours before the scan.

During the test, you will not be allowed to wear or carry the following:

  • debit cards, credit cards
  • mobile phones
  • jewellery
  • watches
  • hair slides and clasps
  • glasses
  • purses and coins
  • any other metal objects
  • before taking a test of the head, women are requested to remove their make-up.

As the test is done using a magnet, the patient is required to inform a member of the staff if he/she or any other person staying with him/her in the scanning room has any of the following objects with them:

  • a metal artery-widening clip
  • a pacemaker
  • an implanted cardioverter – defibrillator
  • electronic implants or prostheses
  • magnetic activated implants or prostheses
  • a neurological stimulation system
  • a spinal cord stimulator
  • a cochlea implant or an implanted hearing aid
  • an implanted medicine infusion device
  • any other prostheses or implants
Notice!

Although magnetic resonance tests are perfectly safe, the presence of metal or electronic devices within the magnetic field may impair the quality of the pictures or even cause a feeling of discomfort for the patient and disrupt the normal operation of electromagnetic stimulators of life functions, which can be dangerous.

How is a MR test done? The patient lies comfortably inside the scanner. The test is neither painful nor dangerous. The room is light and air-conditioned. During the test, the patient is looked after
is constantly monitored by trained staff working under the supervision of a radiologist.
For further details on MR scanning, please contact our radiologist.
People suffering from claustrophobia: the patient has an extended field of vision through mirrors.
Pregnant women should inform the doctor of their condition before taking the test.

Test results:
Your diagnosis will be supplied in writing to you and / or your doctor.

How to schedule an appointment:

  • You can have a MR scan taken for which you will be charged according to our price list.
  • Free of charge: Physician’s office or hospital that has got the contract with National Health Fund (NFZ) can call to schedule appointments for free. Patients may schedule
an appointment directly, but must bring a completed physician referral form with them
to the appointment. For your convenience scheduling in centralized, enabling our staff
to check both locations for the next available appointment. Upon scheduling, you will
be directed to the specific location of your appointment.
